The sensation and popularity of surfing can only be fully understood by people who have tried it. If you haven’t done so already in your life, it’s worth taking an afternoon or two to learn some basic technique. From there, whether you ride a bodyboard or become a devoted surfer, you will more fully be able to understand why surfing is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. There is little that compares to taking your board out onto the ocean and managing to balance on a wall of water. Surfing is both fun and challenging at the same time. Whether you are just getting interested in surfing or you’ve been doing it for years, haydensurf.com aims to provide you with reliable, thorough information about all things pertaining to surfing, including surf gear and equipment.

Of course there is a big difference between someone climbing on the board for the first time and someone who has been surfing for years. The only way to make up that difference is simply to practice as much as you can. Thankfully, while challenging and at times even frustrating, surfing is also a lot of fun. Plenty of people enjoy going to the beach anyway, and why not engage in a challenging and rewarding activity while you are there?

Surfing is unique when compared to sports like snowboarding and skateboarding because it is not solely your own movement with which you need to be concerned. The force of the wave (or the swell) is also moving. The sensation if you are able to perform these maneuvers is actually not dissimilar to flying.

There are many ways to learn how to surf. Many people are self-taught, and simply obtain a board and go try their hand at surfing. This is not the most highly recommended way, merely for safety reasons; however, it has been done, and there are many successful self-taught surfers throughout the world.

Another option is to take surfing lessons. These are typically performed by the beach, and the instructor will cover everything from how to properly position your body on the surfboard, to how to wipe out in the safest way. Either way, you will need a lot of practice, and the willingness to fall quite a few times.

Many people who do master surfing start to think of the practice as almost a religious ritual. Indeed, the origins of the sport reflect this. Ancient Hawaiians and Polynesians started surfing as a somewhat religious experience. It’s hard to believe today, but the practice of surfing was nearly “wiped out” when Christian missionaries came through the Pacific Islands. These missionaries saw the devotion with which the Polynesians and Hawaiians practiced surfing and considered this idolatry.

However, as close as surfing might have to come to being abolished, it came back stronger than ever in the twentieth century, when it was introduced to the masses by the Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku. From there, surfing has grown, imbedding itself as part of the culture in places like California, and spawning such spin-off sports as kiteboarding and windsurfing.

Today surfing is a sport with a professional circuit and competitions held worldwide. Surfing is recognized both as an important part of popular culture, which has triggered a distinctive style of clothing, and even a genre of music, as well as a professional sport. Surfing only promises to continue growing. Thank you for visiting haydensurf.com; please check back often as we regularly update the information.
