Surf Shop
If you are looking to get the necessary equipment to start surfing, you will want to visit a surf shop. Even if you aren’t sure exactly what you are going to purchase, it’s a good idea to pop in and get a sense of what’s available. This way you can also ask whatever questions you have to someone who is knowledgeable and there to help.
Often times, a surf shop will be located beachside and provide everything you need right by the sand. Many times this kind of shop will also allow you to rent equipment, which can be ideal for first-timers who aren’t exactly sure what they want to commit to buying. Often this kind of shop will also feature kiteboarding, windsurfing and wakeboarding equipment.
Of course, it is possible to buy all of this gear online, or even in a large retail store in many cases. However, one of the chief benefits of visiting a surf shop is the advice and experience that the employees have from which you can benefit. There are not many employees working at a surf shop who won’t be thrilled to talk about the newest kind of surfboard, or the best places to go surfing for the first time. Since the shop is local, they will also be able to provide advice specific to your area, rather than generic advice that you could find on the internet.
Getting ready to go surfing may seem simple enough—buy a board, find some water, go surfing—but to get the best experience you will want to be prepared with the best board for your style and body, as well as any other equipment you might need.
After all, surfboards have come a long way in recent years. They were once made of long pieces of solid wood. As you can imagine, these boards were very heavy—they were often fifteen feet in length and could weigh as much as 150 pounds. Even just steering a board of this magnitude would have been difficult—and performing modern tricks on such a board would have been close to impossible.
Today’s boards are far more lightweight, which allow today’s surfers to perform more stunts than ever before. The short board is one of the most significant developments—these are usually about the same height as the rider. Boards today are often made of polyurethane foam coated in fiberglass, which is far lighter than solid wood.
Often, a surf shop will offer surfing lessons as well. At the very least they can fill you in on some of the terminology, which can be a little intimidating for first-timers. But if you spend enough time in a surf shop, you’ll be able to pontificate about the differences between the latest dagger board models in no time.
Probably the biggest benefit of a surf shop is being able to talk to someone in-person, and to see and even feel the equipment beforehand. If you know surfers, get a sense of which shop they recommend, and go there. It’s never a bad idea to ask experienced surfers questions, either. The important thing is to make informed decisions.
